The Purpose of Intake Gaskets

Intake gaskets create an airtight seal at each cylinder's intake port where the manifold bolts to the head. The gasket prevents unmeasured air from entering the combustion chamber, which would lean out the fuel mixture and cause performance problems. Modern multi-layer gaskets use steel cores with composite sealing beads that conform to minor surface irregularities. Port openings in the gasket must align precisely with passages in both the manifold and head for proper airflow. Why Intake Gaskets Deteriorate
